Ellen Bell Sherman age 102, of Purcell, passed away on Friday, October 24, 2014 at her home. She was born July 16, 1912 in Ada, OK. She was the youngest of two children born to Charles Truman Barney and Bell (McCormick) Barney. Ellen grew up in Ada and graduated from Ada High School in 1928. She then attended East Central State Teachers College, graduating in 1930 with a teaching degree. Ellen first began teaching math at Earlsboro, OK. Two years later in Ada, OK, on Christmas Eve of 1932, she married Earl L. Sherman, a young banker from Lexington. They soon made their home in Lexington and lived there until August of 1936. They then moved to Purcell where together they raised three sons, Joe, Tom and Charles. Ellen taught school for nine years in Lexington and later at Purcell until she retired. She was a member of the (AAUW) American Assoc. of University Women and a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Purcell where she taught the Pathfinders Sunday School Class. Ellen was also a member of the McClain Bank Board of Directors from 1998 to 2005. Throughout her life she was an avid gardener and reader. From 1975 -2011 she attended almost every home O.U. basketball game. She liked to stay at home but most of all she like spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by: Parents, Truman and Bell Barney; Husband, Earl Sherman in March 29, 1999; Son, Joe Sherman; Sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Glenn Marken; Two great grandchildren, Jabari and Kenyon Brown;

She is survived by: Two sons, Tom Sherman and wife Dee Dee of Norman, Charles Sherman of Purcell; Daughter-in-law, Kathy Sherman Patterson of Lexington; Four grandchildren, Jeff Sherman and wife Melissa of Kennett Square, Penn, Chris Sherman and wife Nicki of Shawnee, Cindy Sendelback and husband Joe of Noble, Teresa Brown and husband Kenyatta of Purcell; Nine great grandchildren; Emma, Harper, Abby, Maggie, Kierra, Hannah, Sam, Brady and Mirielle; And numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel in Purcell. Interment will be at the Lexington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church in Purcell.
