TAHLEQUAH — Services for Sue Burgess, 78, of Tahlequah, will be held on Thursday, Dec. 29, at 10 a.m., in the Green Country Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Lee, and Rev. Clayton Sellers officiating.

Interment will follow under the care of Green Country Funeral Home in the Tahlequah City Cemetery. Online condolences may be made at tahlequahfuneral.com.

Sue was born on Dec. 23, 1933. She passed peacefully from this life at her home on Stick Ross Mountain on Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011, after a brief battle with cancer.

Sue was the youngest of six children of Charlie and Virgie (Scott) Loftin and the beloved spouse of Ben J. Burgess. She was born and raised in Hulbert. She married Ben on Oct. 7, 1951, in Huntsville, Ark., and attended college at Northeastern State University.

Following graduation, she moved to Kansas and began her teaching career. After a short time in Kansas she returned to Oklahoma where she taught at Inola and then White Oak before retiring. Sue loved educational moments in people of all ages and taught from the elementary level through high school throughout her career. She enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and others after retirement.

She was a marvelous cook and seamstress, an avid reader, enjoyed flower and water gardening, and especially enjoyed a lively conversation.

Welcoming her home are her parents; husband, Ben J. Burgess; son, Ben Jay Burgess; and brothers, Tom and Pete Loftin.

Sue will be forever remembered by her siblings, James C. Loftin, Bob Loftin and Betty Myers; children, Terry Lynn Burgess and Pam Vahdatipour; beloved grandchildren, Charles Vahdatipour, Danny Burgess and Stefanie Stogsdill; treasured great-grandchildren, Abby Vahdatipour and Lane Burgess; caring in-laws, Hamid Vahdatipour, Jonathan Stogsdill, Jennifer Poeschl and Dollie Burgess; as well as countless other friends and family whom were blessed to know her.
