Services for Samuel Houston Sanders were held Saturday, Aug. 25, in the Green Country Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Charles Duvall.

Serving as pallbearers were his grandsons, Johnnie Leep, Jimmy Sanders, Mitchell Sanders, Jackie Sanders, Jerry Sanders and Matthew Sanders. Interment followed in the Caney Cemetery under the care of Green Country Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left at tahlequahfuneral.com.

Samuel Houston Sanders was born in Welling, on Sept. 10, 1915. He passed away on Aug. 22, 2012, at his home in Inola, at the age of 96.

Sam grew up in the Caney and Wauhilla areas of Cherokee County. He attended school at Caney before attending the Chilocco Indian School. He married Dora Etta Dickson on July 23, 1935, in Stilwell. They shared 72 years of marriage before her passing in 2007. With a lifetime of nursery work, he founded the Sanders Nursery in Inola in 1968. Sam liked to travel and enjoyed camping.

Sam has been preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dora Sanders; daughter, Gail Leep; two brothers, and two sisters.

He is survived by his eight children, Jack Sanders and Sue, of Inola, Mitchell Sanders and Dottie, of Inola, Jim Sanders and Mary Ellen, of Locust Grove, Emma Bryant and John, of Tahlequah, Jerry Sanders and Theresa, of Inola, Sam Sanders of Inola, Martin Sanders and Roxanne, of Inola, and Herbert Sanders of Inola; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Emma Pixley of Tahlequah; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones too numerous to mention.
