The Oklahoma 20 Jun 1919 Submitted by: Emily Jordan MAN DIES AFTER ROW AT EL RENO Woman Shoots Intruder With .22 Rifle; Wound Thought Slight EL RENO, Okla., June 19 During an altercation at the home of James O. Vaughn, 302 North Macomb, Wednesday, Martin D. Kelly, Rock Island Brakman, was shot with a .22-caliber rifle. While the wound was considered only a slight one, having struck in the left arm pit, it brought death to the victim seven hours later in the El Reno sanitarium. The version of the story as first reported by the police is that Kelly, accompanied by H.O. Archer, entered the Vaughn home and were ordered out by Mrs. Vaughn. With the rifle in her possession, the latter threatened to shoot, and finally carried out the threat. Kelly is said to have considered the wound as a joke, but was taken to the El Reno sanitarium for treatment, and died. Kelly has lived in El Reno for about two years, and was recently released from military service, having been in the last draft quota which was sent to Camp Cody, Deming, N.M., last fall. He was about 28 years of age and has relatives at Wichita, Kan. Mrs. Vaughn was placed in the county jail this morning and charges of manslaughter in the first degree were filed by County Attorney Roberson. |
