The Oklahoma 27 Feb 1914 Submitted by: Emily Jordan DEATH COMES TO EL RENO OFFICER Davis Guion Dies of Cancer; City Pays Honor at Funeral Service. EL RENO, Okla., Feb. 26. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Elks' hall for Davis Guion, commissioner of highways and public improvements of El Reno, who died at his home here Tuesday night of cancer of the stomach. Rev. R.J. Phipps, pastor of the Presbyterian church, conducted the services, the Elks, Eagles and Knights and Ladies of Security taking a part. Interment was in El Reno cemetery. All public offices and many business houses were closed during the funeral hour Thursday out of respect to the dead commissioner. Mr. Guion was born at Auburn, Ky., February 14, 1862, and came to El Reno sixteen years ago, engaging in business here and later being elected constable. Five years ago he was elected street commissioner, under the aldermanic form of government. He served two years in this office and when the commission form of government was adopted, he made the race for the same office, and was elected by a big majority, for a term of three years. The term expires April 14, of this year. While in office Mr. Guion had the supervision of the rebuilding of the water works system of the city, sinking four new wells which furnished El Reno with an abundant water supply, installing new pumping machinery and laying a number of miles of water main. A wife and daughter, two sisters at Auburn, Ky., and two brothers in Texas, survive. |
