Obit for Josiah rewritten & posted by Jo Aguirre

Thanks to Lillian Cotton for submission of the original Obituary.

Final rites for Josiah J Elliott were held at the Mount Zion church north of El Reno at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 10, 1941 and burial was in the Beecham cemetery near the old family homestead.

He was born in Platt county, Mo. March 13, 1847 and answered last roll call early Friday morning January 10, 1941.  He was married to Miss Margaret Bateman on  October 4, 1868. Mrs. Elliott passed away here August 6, 1938, two months before the couple would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

An "Eighty-Niner," Mr. Elliott and his family settled on a claim 10 miles northeast of El Reno at the opening of that part of the state and except for a few months, had lived in and had a part in the development of the state over 50 years. They came to Carnegie eleven years ago to make their home with their daughter, Mrs. May E. Clawson.

He joined the U.S. Army as a boy of 17 and was a member of the 2nd Colorado Cavalry. He was active in attendance at conventions of the Grand Army and was senior vice commander of the Department of Oklahoma at the time of his death. He was one of the rapidly thinning line of Civil war veterans.

He is survived by his daughter Mrs. May Clawson, of Carnegie; three sons: E.B. Elliott, Fort Worth; C.J. Elliott, Overton, Texas, and Allen Elliott, Trinidad, Colorado.
