After he married Mom they moved to Arkansas to farm cotton. In 1921 they were in Texas. My sister was born in Texas. In 1931 I was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico. After this date they moved to a mine in Congress, Arizona.
They moved to California in 1936 and Dad worked in a mine near Mariposa. He and Mom also pealed poles for the mine.
In 1937 we moved to Redding, California and later to a place called Summit City, where the Shasta Dam was being built. They told Dad that he was to old to work on the dam so he got a job building a night club and after it was built they gave him the job of running the poker games.
In 1939 we moved to a little town that was named Whiskeytown. Dad had bought some mining claims on Clear Creek and he and Mom mined the creek with a gas pump. They made about one dollar an hour and they only worked for 4 hours as Dad said that was all we needed.
In 1941 we moved to Blythe, California and Dad bought 40 acres of farm land and we farmed. This was tax land so he only gave 400 Dollars for the land and then got a feed & seed loan so he could put in the crop. About this time World War II was going on so prices were going up.
In 1942 Dad sold the 40 acres for $4,000 and we moved to Anderson, California and bought 10 acres of bottom land. We farmed this land until 1946 then sold the place and leased a place down by the river and Dad built a fishing resort with cabins and a store. this place was called Nixs Camp. He ran this until he died. I was 19 at that time. |
