March 2010

Ernest Wayne Martin

Ernest W. Martin, second son of Hollis M. and Ona A, [Preston] Martin was born March 31, 1921 in Apache, OK. He returned to the Heavenly Father at 9:40 A.M. on December 18, 2010 in Chickasha, OK.

Ernest attended Apache Public Schools, graduating in 1939. On September 2, 1942, he was drafted and sent to Sheppard Field, Wichita Falls, TX. From there he was sent to San Diego, CA to a B-24 Factory to observe four engine bombers being built. That time was followed by a short stay in Tucson, AZ, then regular duty as an airplane mechanic at Biggs Air Base near El Paso, TX. The job wasn't the greatest experience of his military career and he began to look for other areas of duty. Ernest noticed that flight crews would fly three or four hours a day, bring their planes in, and then take off for the barracks-their day's work done. It didn't take long for him to figure out who had the best deal. So when notice on the bulletin board for Pilots, Bombardiers and Navigators who could pass the I.Q. Test appeared, he signed up, just hoping to find a better job.

After passing the test, Ernest was sent to Easter Oregon College of Education at LaGrande, OR for a crash refresher course in physics, math, meteorology, aircraft and naval identification, etc. Then it was on to Santa Ana, Ca for pre-flight school and another round of testing. Gunnery School at Kingman, AZ, was the next stop in training, followed by Advanced Navigation School at Hondo, TX. At the end of training, Ernest was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 20th Air Force and sent immediately to Langley Field, VA. Nest was time in Lincoln, NE where the crew for his B-29 was assembled. The team picked up a new B-29 in Sacramento, CA for debarkation to the South Pacific Area. First stop in the Pacific was Honolulu, HI, then Guam, with the permanent station on Tinian to follow. During his time at Tinian, Ernest witnessed from the porch of the barracks a convoy consisting of a Navy heavy cruiser, with seven destroyer or sub-chasers around it. His first thought was that it was General MacArthur or Admiral Nimitz, but he later found out he had witnessed the A-Bomb being brought to the port to transfer to the Inola Gay. He flew eleven bombing missions over Japan. Like many of the "Greatest Generation", Ernest never talked openly about his service overseas, but the family had two documents he wrote telling them of some of his service exploits.

Ernest was honorably discharged from the 20th Air Force in 1945. He returned home and married Jessie Lee Thomas on October 18, 1945 just west of Apache. To their union was born two sons, Robert Brian Martin of Kansas City, MO and Gary Wayne Martin of rural Caddo County in Oklahoma. For more than forty years he worked for Dolese Brothers at Richard's Spur. Ernest also served on the Apache School Board during the 1960's. He was a member of the American Legion. After retirement he continued to farm. Ernest was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Apache.

He is survived by his wife, Jessie, of the home, two sons, one sister, Helen Whitaker of Garland, TX and one brother and his wife, Floyd and Dora Martin of Apache. Ernest also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Howard Martin and one sister, Ella McDaniel.

Services will be held Wednesday, December 22nd at 2:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church with Reverend Leon Shade officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Crews Funeral Home.
