Wendell D. Whitman

Wendell D. Whitman Of Cyril, OK was born January 31, 1931 in Hollis, OK to Scrap Jackson and Annie Lou [Batten] Whitman, he passed away at his home in Cyril on September 18th at the age of 86.

Wendell graduated from Hollis High School and entered the Army where he served in the Korean War.

He married Edwina J. Orr in Childress, TX on December 23, 1950. She preceded him in death. After his honorable discharge, he went to college to get his degree in education, eventually earning a Masterâ•.s degree in Administration.

He began his teaching career at Cyril High School where he also coached athletics. He taught several years, became the principal and eventually the Superintendent of Cyril School District until his retirement in 1990. Wendell was instrumental in getting internet access in public schools across the state, with Cyril being the first school to have internet. He was honored with the Cyril football stadium being named after him and he was inducted into the Harmon County Athletic Hall of Fame.

Wendell belonged to the Cyril Rotary Club, and was a faithful member of the Cyril Church of Christ.

He enjoyed hunting with his brothers, discovered the joy of fishing and was an avid football fan, watching any football game he could, but especially the Dallas Cowboys. His greatest love was his family and he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by: 2 daughters-Chris and Steve Wilson Bartlesville, OK DeeAnn Whitman Cyril 2 sons- Jack and Shelly Whitman Edmond, OK Scott Whitman Cyril, 8 grandcildren- Chase Wilson, Braven Wilson, Heather Coffey, Taylor Wald, Rachel Whitman, Terah Whitman, Rebekah Whitman, Sarah Whitman 5 great-grandchildren-Brendan Wilson, Natalie Wilson, Stori Coffey, Everly Wald, Jackson Wald.

He was preceded in death by: His parents His wife 3 brothers- Harold Whitman, S.J. Whitman, Leroy Whitman.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 21st, at 10:00 A.M at the Cyril Church of Christ with Pastor Steve Hill officiating and assisted by former pastor and fishing buddy, J. Farber. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Celestial Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Cyril Funeral Home.

Edwina June [Orr] Whitman

Funeral service for Edwina June Whitman, age 72, of Cyril, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 9, 2006, at the Cyril Church of Christ. Doug Graham will officiate and Don Williams will assist.

Edwina was born the daughter of Arvle Jessie Orr and Violet Elizabeth Darter Orr on December 22, 1933, in Hollis, Oklahoma. She died on November 6, 2006, in Lawton, Oklahoma.

Interment will be in the Celestial Gardens Cemetery.

Service will be under the direction of the McRay's Cyril Funeral Home.
