Sally Jo[ Morse] Wass

A Celebration of the Life of Sally Jo Wass, 83, Cyril, will be held at 2pm on Monday, October 5, 2015 at the First Baptist Church, Cyril, OK. Sally died Wednesday, September 30, 2015 after a brief illness in Oklahoma City in the home of her daughter, Denise Wass-Whitehead.

Arrangements are under the direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home, Lawton, OK.

Sally Jo Morse was born at home on December 27, 1931 in Calvin, Oklahoma to George and Leone Morse. She grew up in Calvin, was a graduate of Calvin High School and attended Monticello College in Godfrey, Illinois. She worked in the hotel industry, first in Dallas at the Baker Hotel, and then at the Skirvin Hotel in Oklahoma City as part of the catering industry. A photograph of her still hangs in the lobby of the Skirvin today.

Sally married Jerry James Wass on December 18, 1954 at the First Methodist Church in Calvin, OK. Sally accompanied her husband, who was a First Lieutenant in the Army, to Ft. Hood, Killeen, Texas. After her husband's military service, they moved to El Paso TX, then to Odessa, TX, and Phoenix, Arizona, before moving to Cyril, where Jerry had been raised, and where he managed the family lumberyard and paving business.

Sally's door was always open. Many children other than her own called her "Mama Sally". Kids and friends always knew they could show up and receive hugs, advice, and something to eat. Her home was often a home to neighbors, employees and friends of her children seeking a place to belong. In 1977, when her children were grown, Sally started Flowers, Etc., the flower shop she owned and ran for nearly 40 years. Her first employee, LuAnn Worthley was by her side from the beginning to the end. Sally was always there to help her customers and friends celebrate births, graduations, marriages, anniversaries, and the day in day out events of life. Attending her holiday open houses was a tradition with many local families. Sally reluctantly retired in September 2013

. Sally and Jerry helped start and build St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Lawton, and when that church was sold they began to attend the Episcopal services at St. Barbara's, Old Post Chapel, Fort Sill. It was their mission to welcome and feed soldiers attending St. Barbara's during their basic training, with Sally often making brownies or treats to give them a taste of home.

Sally is survived by her husband, Jerry, of Cyril; her daughter Denise Whitehead, Oklahoma City; a son, James Allen [Bo] Wass and his wife, Alison, Helena, AL. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren, Jeremy Wass and his wife Carolyn, Mt Olive, AL; Zachary Wass, McCalla, AL; and Andrew Whitehead and his wife Megan, Oklahoma City. Sally relished being the great grandmother of both Miranda Wass and Walker Whitehead.

Sally was preceded in death by her parents, George and Leone Morse, her beloved daughter, Shelly Elizabeth Wass Lee, and her son-in-law, Gary Whitehead.

Sally will be buried at a later date in the Celestial Gardens Cemetery in Cyril. She was proud to have been the "founding mother" of the cemetery, spearheading fundraising for the purchase of the land and persuading the City of Cyril to accept it for use as a cemetery.

Sally loved color - especially red, so feel free to come to her service in living color. Flowers may be sent to the First Baptist Church, Cyril, or a memorial may be made to the Salvation Army or to the donor's favorite charity.
