Memorial services for Ashley Ann Vickers Porter, 42, of McKinney, Texas, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Durant, Okla., with Rev. James Blagg officiating. Ashley died Wednesday, Nov. 26, from complications of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Arrangements were handled by Aria Cremation Services of Plano, Texas.
Ashley was born on Sept. 29, 1966, in Oklahoma City. She was a 1984 graduate of Durant High School, and a 1989 graduate of the University of Oklahoma. While at OU, she majored in early childhood education, and later obtained her Master's Degree in reading from Northeastern Oklahoma State University. While at OU, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma social sorority.
Ashley began her teaching career at Houston Elementary in Denison, Texas. She also taught in Glenpool, Okla.; Tampa, Fla., and completed her last eight years of teaching at Slaughter Elementary School in McKinney, Texas. While at Slaughter Elementary, she served several years as Third Grade Team Leader, and was also selected as Slaughter's Teacher of the Year. The administration, faculty, staff and students of Slaughter Elementary recently planted a redbud tree in front of their school honoring Ashley's excellence as an educator and in loving remembrance of her vibrant spirit.
Preceding her in death were her loving grandparents, Jack and Virginia Compton and Vic and Velma Vickers of Durant. She is survived by her husband Dave and their two children, Jackson, age 10, and Jenna, age 6, all of McKinney. Ashley is also survived by her devoted parents, Tom and Judy Vickers of Durant; special aunt and uncle, Jackie and Kenneth Peters of Denison, Texas; first-cousin Cheryl Peters Phelps, husband Randy and children Ivy and Riley of Hollister, Calif. Other loving relatives surviving are her mother-in-law and father-in-law. Shirley and Glen Porter of Harlingen, Texas, and Chad and Dianne Bledsoe of Lawton, Okla.
In addition to the memorial services that will be held on Dec. 27 in Durant, a memorial service was also held in McKinney, Texas, on Thursday, Dec. 4, at 4:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, where Ashley and her family often attended. Senior Pastor Tommy Brumett officiated.
In lieu of flowers, Ashley requested that memorials be made to either the American Cancer Society, the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society or to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
Following the memorial service at St. John's Episcopal Church, a reception, celebrating Ashley's life, will be hosted by members of Chapter DJ, P.E.O. Sisterhood and held in the home of Mary Ann Stewart. A private disposition of ashes will be shared by both families at a later date
