Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in N.S. Griggs and Sons Funeral Directors Pioneer Chapel, 2615 Paramount Blvd., with Bret McCasland officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel.

Mr. Hartwell was born in Bennington, Okla., and was raised in Hall County. He served in the Army during World War II, from 1943 until 1946 in the Army Corps of Engineers 73rd Combat Division. He fought in many battles including the Battle of the Bulge with Gen. Patton. He served from 1946 to 1948 in Japan and was recalled to serve in the Korean conflict.

He married Opal Webb on Aug. 15, 1958, at Portales, N.M. In the 1950s, he worked in the oil fields in Texas and New Mexico. He moved to Amarillo and owned and operated an appliance repair business.

He worked for Great Western Distributors for 27 years before retiring as warehouse manager in 1987. He was a member of Texas Panhandle Chapter of Model A Ford Club as well as a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by a brother, G.W. Hartwell, who died in France during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; a brother, James Hartwell and wife, Noni, of Amarillo; a sister, Arletta Cobb and husband, Phillip, of Wellington; and many nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials be to American Cancer Society, 3915 Bell St., Amarillo, TX 79109.
