Ronald Paul Rymer
(January 5, 1948 - January 9, 2009)

Ronald Paul Rymer was born January 5, 1948 at Okeene, OK to Paul and Geneva (Keith) Rymer. He departed this life January 9, 2009 at his home in Canton, OK. As a young boy, Ronnie accepted God as his savior and was baptized into the Christian Church. He grew up in Canton and graduated from Canton High School in 1966. Ronnie then attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University for a short time before enlisting in the Army. While serving in the Vietnam War, Specialist Five Rymer was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with "V" device in Vietnam for heroism recorded November 16, 1969. He was 21 years old at that time. Rymer served with the 12th Evacuation Hospital, United States Army. He was a member of a surgical team which removed a live grenade from a severely wounded soldier. The commendation, signed by Captain W. Zachardy, reads: "Specialist Rymer, distinguished himself by valorous actions during a surgical procedure calculated to remove a 40mm high explosive grenade from the body of a severely wounded member of the United States Army. Specialist Rymer labored under the apprehension of great danger for nearly two hours. During this period every effort was being made to stem massive bleeding in the patient’s abdominal cavity. Because of the seriousness of the wound, it had not been possible to procure x-rays in order to identify presence or location of the missile and because of the life saving considerations, it was not possible to immediately search out the explosive. Specialist Rymer and his associates worked for a lengthy period of time under intense mental pressure in a life saving attempt to save a fellow serviceman. Specialist Rymer’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Army Medical Department and the United States Army." After Ronnie completed his military service, he returned to Oklahoma and worked in the oil field. When his health began to fail, he volunteered at the Thomas Nursing Home where his mother was a resident. He organized activities for the residents and could see his mom on a daily basis . Everyone liked Ronnie. He was always so cheerful and ready to help anyone who needed help. He also appreciated all of the help he received from all of his family and friends. He loved you all. Ronnie was a proud man with a good and caring heart. He loved his God, his country, his family, and friends. He was a caring son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend. Ronnie was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by one sister, Gayla and her husband James Colvard of Woodward, OK; one aunt, Helen Oaks of Oklahoma City; three nephews, Justin Colvard and his wife Angie, John Pierce and Cody Colvard; great-niece Kylie; also three great-nephews, Devry, Timothy and Dawson who will miss him very much. Others who will greatly miss his warm smile and contagious laugh are a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at Canton Christian Church with Steve Driskill, Pastor Glen Blood, and Nelson Dickinson officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Canton Cemetery under the direction of Haigler-Pierce Funeral Home, Canton, OK. Memorials may be made to a veteran’s organization or the Canton Senior Citizens with the funeral home serving as custodian. Condolences may be made online at www.haiglerpierce.com.
