ENID - Graveside service for Mary Brown, 96, will be 11 a.m. today, Dec. 15, 2011, in Canton Cemetery. Arrangements by Haigler-Pierce Funeral Home, Canton. Condolences may be made online at www.haiglerpierce.com.

Mary was born Dec. 7, 1915, in Hitchcock to John M. and Catherine Harnett and died Monday, Dec. 12, 2011, in Okeene.

Surviving are daughter, Rita Ann Brownsworth and husband Willard of Okeene; son, Dr. Talbert W. Brown and wife Carol of Grimes, Iowa; five grandchildren, Greg, Vicki, Gary, Scott and Russell; and nine great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by husband, Buck, eight sisters and two brothers.

Mary Jewett Brown was born on December 7, 1915 in Hitchcock, OK to parents John M. and Catherine Harnett. She passed away on December 12, 2011 at the Summit Living Center in Okeene, OK. Mary was one of eleven Harnett children. The family moved to Dewey County about 6 miles west and 5 miles north of Canton, OK and then moved to Kansas City, KS. In 1923 at the age of 7, Mary went to live with Sherman and Cecil Brown on a farm west of Canton. She was raised by Sherman and Cecil and graduated from high school at Longdale, OK.

In 1934 she married Clarence “Buck” Brown in Fairview, OK. They made a home west of what is now Canton Lake until they moved to Southard, OK in 1936. Buck Brown was employed by the United States Gypsum Company. They moved to Canton, OK in 1944 and lived there except for two years on the farm in 1948-49 until 2002. They had two children, Rita Ann and Talbert Wayne. Buck died in 1973. Mary continued to live in Canton until she entered Fairview Fellowship Home in 2002 and then Summit Living Center in Okeene.

Mary was primarily in the home but did work for Ned Herod in Harod Grocery and later for a number of years in Goode's Store. Mary was active in the First United Methodist Church serving in the Women's Society and for years prepared the communion trays for that service. She also worked in the Methodist Church Thrift Store for a number of years.

Mary was a member of the Blaine County Historical Society and greatly enjoyed their trips. Mary was the descendant of Scot-Irish grandparents and her genealogy can be traced to the Mayflower, and her ancestors founded the town of Rowley, MA in 1637. Her Grandfather was a veteran of the Civil War and three of her ancestors were in the Revolutionary War.

She is survived by her daughter, Rita Ann Brownsworth and her husband Willard of Okeene; son Dr. Talbert W. Brown and wife Carol of Grimes, IA; five grandchildren, Greg Brownsworth of Lawton, Vicki Brownsworth of Oklahoma City, Gary Brownsworth of Hugo, Scott Brown of Grimes, IA and Dr. Russell Brown of Johnson City, TN; and nine great-grandchildren; Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence “Buck” Brown, her mother and father, eight sisters, Mildred, Carrie, Catherine, Grace, Helen, Ruth, Ester and Lola; two brothers, Bert and Fred;

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 15, 2011 at Canton Cemetery with Chaplain Randy Weaver officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of Haigler-Pierce Funeral Home, Canton. Condolences may be made online at www.haiglerpierce.com.
