Funeral service for Virgil Charles Thorp will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at Helena First Christian Church, with Pastor Jay Drawbridge officiating. Burial will follow in Timberlake Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Helena. Remembrances may be shared at www.lanmanmemorials. com. Virgil, son of Bert and Lillie Williams Thorp, was born in Helena on Feb. 9, 1936, and passed away Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at Integris Bass Baptist Health Center in Enid.

He attended Helena Public School and graduated from Northwestern State College with a master’s degree in teaching.

On Aug. 28, 1957, he married Marilyn Ford. They made their home in Helena, where he farmed, was a school principal in the Helena-Goltry school system for 20 years and an Alfalfa County Commissioner for 10 years. His greatest pleasure was helping his grandchildren with their show steers. Virgil was a member of Helena First Christian Church, where he served on the church board and taught the high school Sunday school class.

He served on the Enid Production Credit Association, the Helena Farmers Co-op and the Helena-Goltry Fair Boards.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; two sons, Tom Thorp and wife Cheryl, and Michael Thorp and wife Shelly; two daughters, Vicki Frey and husband Larry and Shelly Shepard and husband Craig; 13 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Terry.

Memorials may be given to First Christian Church Building Fund or the charity of donor’s choice through the funeral home.
