DANIEL ALBERT SHORTER
Alva, OK. -- Daniel Albert Shorter died Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at the Oklahoma Heart Hospital in Okla. City, OK. at age 78.
He was born May 20, 1927 in Goltry, OK. to Edna I. Mason Shorter and Wiley B. Shorter. He graduated from Northwestern State College in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He obtained his Masters in Science Degree from OSU in 1960 and received his Doctor of Philosophy from OSU in 1966. He served proudly in the United States Navy during World War II. He married Margery Jean Peck on January 13, 1946 in Goltry, OK. After moving to Anthony, KS. then to Stillwater, OK., they settled in Alva, OK. in 1960.
Dan began his teaching career in Anthony, KS. where he taught math and initiated the tennis program. They moved to Alva, OK. in 1960 where he became a Professor of Biology at Northwestern Oklahoma State University and was known affectionately as "Dr. Dan." After retiring in 1987 from NWOSU he became director of Northwest Family Services in Alva. He served on the boards of Share Medical Center, Northwest Area Vo-Tech, First United Methodist Church, Woods County Retired Teachers Association, Cherokee Strip Museum, and Alva Mural Society. He was an Oklahoma Blood Institute volunteer. He was an active member of Kiwanis, American Legion and Masons. He was a devoted Christian and a member of the First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Margery, of Alva, OK.; three daughters, Cynthia Bough and husband Daniel of Frisco, TX., Edana Caldwell of Woodward, OK., and Sherry Fullbright and husband, Glen of Edmond, OK.; one son, Terry Shorter and wife, Lynne of Kansas City, MO.; seven grandchildren, Casey Caldwell and wife Summer of Poulsbo, WA., Carrie Caldwell of Frisco, TX., Eric Casper of Okla. City, OK., Erin Casper of Edmond, OK., Evan Casper of Edmond, OK., Emily Shorter of St. Louis, MO., and Sarah Shorter of Kansas City, MO.; and one sister, Oleeva Evans of Enid, OK.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Lloyd Shorter, George W. Shorter, and Alpha John Shorter; and three sisters, Ida Shorter, Ilene Noland, and Betty J. Baker.
Funeral service will be on Friday, August 5, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Alva, OK. with Rev. Terry Martindale and Rev. J. Weegie Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Timberlake Cemetery south and west of Jet, OK. with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home Inc. of Helena, OK. Condolences may be shared online at www.lanmanfuneralhomes.com by clicking on the Ultimate Tributes icon. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Helena on Thursday.
Memorials may be given in lieu of flowers to the Cherokee Strip Museum or the American Lung Association for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Research through the Lanman Funeral Home.

S1C Daniel A. Shorter was born May 20, 1927 at Goltry and attended Goltry High School and Northwestern College. He was inducted into the service at Oklahoma City on May 25, 1945, receiving his training at the US Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, with Co. 75. He was discharged from the service Dec. 4, 1945.

July 21, 1924—Dec. 10, 2013 Margery Jean Shorter died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at Bellevue Health & Rehabilitation Center in Oklahoma City, Okla. She was 89. She was born July 21, 1924, in Jet, Okla., to Clayton H. Peck and Anna Louie Peck. She graduated from Jet High School in 1943. She married Daniel Albert Shorter Jan. 13, 1946, in Goltry, Okla. After moving from Alva, Okla., to Anthony, Kan., then to Stillwater, Okla., they returned to Alva in 1960, where they spent the remainder of their lives together. Margery was a homemaker until 1965, when she began working part-time for Blakely's Print Shop. All her children enjoyed helping her in the print shop on occasion. In 1974, Margery became the grade school secretary for Washington Elementary School, where she retired in 1990.

She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Alva, First United Methodist Women, Woods County Retired Teachers Association, and the Woods County Home Extension.

Margery enjoyed volunteering with blood drives as well as cooking and baking for her family and friends. She was an avid bell collector. She was a devoted Christian, wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by four children: daughter, Cynthia (Daniel) Bough of Frisco, Texas; daughter, Edana Caldwell of Woodward, Okla.; daughter, Sherry Fullbright of Edmond, Okla.; and son, Terry Shorter of Alva, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Casey (Anne) Caldwell of Oklahoma City, Okla., Carrie (Chris) Rothell of Frisco, Texas, Eric Casper of Nicaragua, Erin (Leslie) Casper Helvey of Edmond, Okla., Evan Casper of Edmond, Okla., Emily (Justin) Laughridge of San Diego, Calif., and Sarah Shorter of Kansas City, Mo.; and six great-grandchildren, Carsen Caldwell, Noah Laughridge, Carter Casper, Blakely Casper, Jonah Laughridge and Caden Rothell. She also is survived by her sister, Louise Stepp of Enid, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Mina Peck and Clara Higgins.

Service will be 2 p.m. today, Dec. 13, 2013, at Lanman Funeral Home, Cherokee, with Rev. Terry Martindale officiating. Burial will follow in Timberlake Cemetery, with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Cherokee. Viewing will be 9 a.m. to service time today, Dec. 13. (www.lanmanmemori als.com)
