Jet, OK — JET — Funeral service for George Burton Sands will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, at Jet Nazarene Church, with the Rev. Dean Holt officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, north of Jet. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Helena. Viewing will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, Feb. 4. (www.lanmanmemo rials.com.)

George was born Jan. 16, 1928, in Bergman, Ark., the son of John Burton and Bernice Rushing Sands. He passed from this life on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014.

He and Clara Johnson were married in Canon City, Colo., on Dec. 23, 1953.

George’s career was the U.S. Navy, where he was a damage controlman for a total of 23 years, two months and 18 days.

After he retired from the Navy, he and Clara came to Jet to live, where he was a firefighter and became the State of Oklahoma fire marshal. He had served as commander of DAV and commander of VFW.

George was a member of Jet Nazarene Church, where he served as treasurer.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Logan and Dean.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Sands; seven children, Richard Sands and wife Bonnie, Robert Sands and wife Pamela, Jim Sands and wife Patsy, Larry Sands, David Sands and wife Tonya, Greg Sands and wife Sherri, and Tina Etter and husband Allan; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Donna Reddell; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans through the funeral home.
