LTC Phillip Wayne Otis, Burlington
Funeral service will be Jan. 11 at 10 a.m. at the Burlington High School Auditorium with Dr. Richard Duckworth and Chaplain Richard Piontkowski officiating. Burial will follow at Keith Cemetery west and south of Burlington with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Cherokee.Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Gisela Otis of Burlington; two daughters, Megan Marie Thomas of Ft. Polk, La., Barbara Rose Phillips-Johnson and Monte Dean Johnson of Stillwater; three sons, Nathan Robert Otis of Stafford, Va., Marc Wiedenmann of Flanders-Nersigen, Germany, and Frank Allen Phillips of Norman; his parents, Sam and Phyllis Otis of Burlington; one brother, Stan Otis of Garden City, Kan., as well as numerous other relatives and friends.Memorials may be made to the Burlington Fire Department or the U. An accident in Major County killed a Burlington man on the eve of his daughter's wedding. The one-vehicle accident occurred at 9 p.m. Friday on Highway 58, 1.7 miles north of the SH 58 and US 412 junction.
Phillip Wayne Otis, 44, of Burlington was a passenger in the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene of a massive head injury. His daughter, Barbara Phillips, planned to be married to Monte Johnson Saturday afternoon at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, but the wedding has been postponed.
Otis, who was in the military, had recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq.Trooper Donald Kraft of the Major County Detachment of the Highway Patrol investigated the accident. He reported all occupants of the car were wearing seatbelts. The weather was clear and the roadway icy.
Allen Phillips, 21, of Burlington was driving a 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix northbound on SH 58. He swerved right to avoid hitting a coyote. The car slid off the east side of the roadway, leaving 20 feet of side skid before the left front wheel dug into the ground. The car then rolled one time, coming to rest on its wheels, sliding backward and hitting an embankment on the rear passenger side of the car where it came to rest.Phillips was transported by Major County Ambulance Service to Fairview Hospital where he was treated for a leg injury and released. Another passenger, Mark Michael Wiedenmann-Flanders, 27, of Nersingen, Germany, was transported by private vehicle to Fairview Hospital where he was treated for a neck injury and released.
