Homer adopted Faye's two sons and two daughters. They also adopted three of their granddaughters. Homer quoted this concerning hobbies: "Hobbies, I really don't have time to have a hobby. I live with four women!" He loved children and animals and was an avid reader and historian.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Bertha Reuss; his siblings, Della DuBois, Glenna Custard and Chuck Reuss.
