Scott Tuxhorn, 87, died peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015, at his home in Highland Village, Texas. He was born March 4, 1928, to Marvin “Butch” Tuxhorn and Enda Tuxhorn in Enid, Okla., and raised on the family farm near Helena, Okla.

He graduated from Helena High School in 1946, and served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1946-1947. He earned his bachelor’s (1951) and master’s (1957) degrees in education from Northwestern Oklahoma State University. He continued his education earning a Doctorate of Education from Oklahoma State University in 1967.

After a career in local public education and serving in the Oklahoma House of Representatives, Scott was appointed by Governor Dewey Bartlett as Chairman of the State Board of Public Affairs and State Superintendent of Public Instruction. In 1971, Scott began his career of federal service as Deputy Regional Director of U.S. Health, Education and Welfare, which included the states of New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas, followed by other leadership positions, retiring in 1995.

He proudly supported the Republican Party and the Oklahoma State Cowboys. His community activities included the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, the Shriners, the Lions Club, the Gideons and volunteer work in Denton County, Texas, on the MHMR Board of Trustees from 1999 – 2012.

The family will be present for viewing from 5-7 p.m. today, Oct. 1, 2015,at Lanman Funeral Home Inc., 309 E. 4th St, Helena, Okla. Funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at First Christian Church, 201 E. Third St., also in Helena. Graveside service will follow at Good Hope Cemetery.
