ENID, OK — James Henry Simpson was born to Roy and Edith (Campbell) Simpson four miles east of Helena, Okla.

He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1959, with a B.S. degree in agriculture education. He was on the OSU livestock judging team while in college. James later received his master’s degree in 1970.

James began his teaching career in Beaver, Okla. While in Beaver, he was a member of the Jaycees, serving as Oklahoma chairman.

James also was a member of the Oklahoma Young Farmers and was the recipient of the Outstanding Young Farmer Award.

He made many lifelong friends teaching at Beaver and enjoyed telling the story about coaching the state winning FFA Livestock Judging Team and winning at the National Contest at Kansas City.

It was even more special because his sister, Mary Lou, then the Extension 4-H Agent in Enid, had her Oklahoma state winning 4-H Meat Judging Team in Kansas City at the same time!

James continued his teaching career at Helena and later ran the greenhouse and welding shop at the Training School, also in Helena.

After retiring from teaching, James got his real estate license, sold real estate for a few years and farmed. At age 69, he was elected District 3 Commissioner of Alfalfa County.

His daughter, Janet, has been a missionary with New Tribes Mission for several years, serving in Papua New Guinea, and now in Missouri; his daughter, Kari, is president of the ACB Bank of Cherokee, Okla; and his son, Wayne, has taught agricultural education at Chisholm for 30 years.

Janet is married to Gordon Wohlgemut. They have two sons, Josh and Alan; Kari is married to Kevin Roberts and they have two daughters, Kinsy and Katera and a son, Kort; and Wayne has a daughter, Randi and a son, Jake.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Rolland, Rex and Don.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Lou Swander-Sloup; sister-in-law, Virginia Simpson; his children; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 27, 2014, at the Christian Church in Helena, followed by a light snack in the fellowship hall, with interment at Good Hope Cemetery. Pastor Jay Drawbridge will officiate with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home Inc. of Helena. Memories may be shared at www.lanmanmemorials.com.

Memorials may be made to “New Tribe Mission” for the ongoing mission of Gordon and Janet Wohlgemut through the funeral home.
