Funeral service for George F. DeVore, 79, of Helena, will be 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at the United Methodist Church in Helena with Dr. Mike Fullingim officiating. Burial will follow in Good Hope Cemetery with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home Inc. of Helena. Viewing will be 2-7 p.m today at the funeral home and before the service at the church.

George was born on Sept. 23, 1929, at Stone Creek Valley, Ohio, to William Isaac DeVore and Jessie Florence Elwood DeVore and passed from this life on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Enid.

George graduated from high school in New Philadelphia, Ohio. He served in the United States Air Force from 1948 to 1969, attaining the rank of master sergeant before retiring. George received numerous commendations in reconnaissance and special operations. George did his flight training at Vance Air Force Base in Enid. He served in Korea as a member of the 67th Tactical Recon. While stationed in France and later on Johnson Island, he completed missions in Germany, Morocco, Belgium, Holland, other overseas bases and in the United States.

George married Dora Jean Astley on Oct. 19, 1951, in Oklahoma City. They lived in Helena for 40-plus years. George owned his own photography studio in Cherokee, taking photographs of weddings and anniversary celebrations. He worked at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, the state of Oklahoma at Helena Training School for Boys and James Crabtree Correctional Center in Helena, retiring in 1991. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Helena. He enjoyed photography, camping, restoring old Corvairs, coin collecting and teaching others how to water ski. George was a Scout Master and helped with the United Methodist youth group.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.

George is survived by his wife, Dora Jean of Helena; two daughters, Linda Jean Rhodes of Dacoma and Karen Ann Horyna and husband, Bo of El Dorado, Kan.; one son, Michael Lynn DeVore of Dallas, Texas; six grandchildren, Beth LeCrone and husband, Greg, Daniel Koehn and wife, Bobbi, Taylor Horyna, Ashley Horyna, Brendon Horyna and Kristen Horyna; two great-grandchildren, Will and Emily LeCrone.

Memorials may be given to Helena United Methodist Church through the funeral home.

Dora Jean DeVore was born on September 24, 1929 in Helena, Oklahoma to Harry B. and Lida V. Frickel Astley. She passed from this life into eternity with Jesus on February 6, 2020. Dora Jean attended country school and Helena High School, graduating in 1948 and Enid General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating with her RN certificate in 1951. She married George F. DeVore on October 19, 1951 and enjoyed over 50 years of marriage before his passing in 2008. Together they had three children, Linda Rhodes of Dacoma, Mike DeVore of Dallas, and Karen (Bo) Horyna of El Dorado, Kansas.

As a military couple, they began their journey in Alamogordo, New Mexico, then moved to Ursel, France, and to Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, before returning and settling in Helena. Dora Jean worked as an RN over 50 years in Alva Oklahoma Hospital, New Mexico, Helena Clinic, Ro-Mel Nursing Home in Helena, Helena Training School for Boys, and NORCE before semi-retiring to serve her community and care for her family and friends. Dora Jean enjoyed volunteering at Wheatheart, serving at the Helena United Methodist Church, and assisting others in their medical care. Her numerous interests revolved around sporting events, shopping, hair appointments, road trips, and grandchildren.

Dora Jean has seven grandchildren, Beth (Greg) LeCrone of Lakenheath, England, Daniel (Bobbi) Koehn of Weatherford, Oklahoma, Taylor Horyna of Wichita, Kansas, Ashley Horyna of Augusta, Kansas, Brendon Horyna of Manhattan, Kansas, Kristen Horyna of El Dorado, Kansas, and Mallory Horyna of El Dorado, Kansas. She has five great grandchildren, Will and Emily LeCrone, Dallen and Jase Koehn, and Harper Brown.

Dora Jean was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; three brothers, Kenneth, Carl, and Lawrence Astley.

She is survived by her children; grandchildren; great grandchildren; numerous family and friends who loved her dearly. Their favorite childhood story is of her horse, Sparky that she would ride to school, unless he bucked her off and ran back home.

Celebration of Dora Jean's life will be Sunday, February 9, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at the Helena United Methodist Church with the Reverend Lisa Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Good Hope Cemetery with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Helena. Viewing with family present will be Saturday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. www.lanmanmemorials.com Facebook: Lanman Funeral Home Inc.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Helena United Methodist Church through the funeral home.
