Good Hope Cemetery


Austin Edwin Cordray, 223881, Lt., USNR, of Helena, Oklahoma, was born March 30, 1920 at Helena and graduated from Helena high school and University of Oklahoma. He enlisted at Oklahoma City, August 22, 1942 and received his service training at US Naval Reserve, Midshipman School in New York, Diesel Engineering School at Cornell University, and Submarine School at New London, Connecticut. He was commissioned Ensign February 17, 1943; Lt. (JG) April 1, 1944, and Lt. November 1, 1945, and served 18 months overseas in the Asiatic – Pacific Theater of War with the 7th Fleet. Lt. Cordray served as engineering officer aboard the USS YMS 326 in the Aleutian Islands. He commissioned the US submarine Chub and served on it as Communication, Engineering, and Diving officer for three successful war patrols. He received his discharge December 14, 1945.

Decorations: American Theater of War Medal, Asiatic – Pacific Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with 1 Bronze Star, Victory Medal with 1 Bronze Star, Submarine Combat Insignia with 2 Gold Stars.
