Cherokee Municipal Cemetery


Mass of Christian Burial for Isidore Valdez, 86, of Cherokee, will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Cornelius Catholic Church, Cherokee. The Rev. Shane Tharp will officiate. Burial will be in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are by Wharton Funeral Chapel, Alva. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

He was born May 15, 1921, in Sugarland, Texas, to Maria and Trinidad Valdez and died Monday, May 21, 2007, at Collier Hospice Center, Wheatridge, Colo.

He married Santiaga Phyllis Briseno Nov. 6, 1942, in Cherokee. She died April 9, 1990.

He worked for Santa Fe Railroad and retired June 30, 1981. He was a member of St. Cornelius Catholic Church.

Surviving are four daughters, Shirley Seevers of Alva, Josie Shafer of Cherokee, Lupe Strickland of Fort Worth, Texas, and Frances Metcalf of Alva; two sons, Richard “Dick” and Joe Valdez, both of Arvada, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

In addition to his wife, Santiago, he was preceded in death by one son.

Memorials may be made to Collier Hospice Center or Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Funeral services for Santiaga Phyllis Valdez, 67, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Cornelius Catholic Church with Father Dave Imming and the Rev. Alan Runge officiating. Burial will be in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery directed by Goodwin Funeral Home.

She died April 9, 1990, at Alfalfa County Hospital.

She was born April 9, 1923, in Eaton Colorado to Manuel and Sebestina Abundes Briseno. She grew up in Hershey, Nebraska, where she attended school. She married Isidore Valdez on November 6, 1942 in Lexington Nebraska.

They lived most of their married life in Cherokee except for a few years in Enid. She was a member of St. Cornelius Church and the Altar Society of the church.

She is survived by her husband of the home; three sons, Richard of Arvada Colorado, Joe of San Francisco California, and Ben of Alva Oklahoma; four daughters, Shirley Seevers of Alva, Josie Shafer of Cherokee, Frances Metcalf of Enid, and Lupe Puente of Ft Worth Texas; one sister Mary Orneias of Cherokee, three brothers John Briseno of Oklahoma CIty, Sisto Briseno of Des Moines Iowa, and Jim Briseno of Carlisle Iowa; 14 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers.

Memorials may be made to the church through the funeral home.
