Cherokee, OK — CHEROKEE — Funeral service for Ronald “Ron” Shafer will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Cherokee First United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Robert Duran and Tom Cooksey officiating. Burial will be in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Cherokee. Viewing with the family present will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 9, at the funeral home. Ron was born Feb. 4, 1943, in Cherokee, Okla., the son of Roscoe W. and Maurine Tucker Shafer.

He went through the Cherokee School System, where he was active in 4-H, FFA, sports and music. After his graduation from Cherokee High School in 1961, Ron entered Oklahoma State University and in 1965, he graduated with a degree in ag economics.

Ron and Mary Colter were married Jan. 18, 1997, and made their home near Cherokee.

Except for a few years, when he lived and worked as a county extension agent in Lee County, Fla., Ron was a farmer and rancher in Alfalfa County, where he exhibited his love for the farm and cattle. He had served on the Farmers Co-op Board for several years.

Ron’s love of music led him to be very active in the United Methodist Church Choir. He was a 42-year-member of the Cherokee Masonic Lodge, Corinthian 307, where he served in all places, elected and appointed.

Those who have preceded him in death are his parents; brother, R.W. Shafer; and sister, Sybil Boyer.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary Shafer of Cherokee; one daughter, Laine S. Foote and husband George Jr. of Guymon and their family, Patty and Tom Keller of Shawnee and children, Tommy, Ethan and Kennedi, lst Lt. Dayne and Katie Foote of Clovis, N.M., and Daryne Shay Foote of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; one son, Tyler Shafer of Norman; step-children, Chad and Kim Lyons of Kiowa, Kan., and children, Destiny, Zane and Brooke Lyons, Jennifer and Chad Roach of Cherokee and children, Jason, Colby and Clayton Roach, Patrick and Tricia Lyons of Medford and children, Isaiah and Landon Lyons; one sister, Sue Ann Marshall and husband Joe of Norman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Cherokee School Theatre, Cherokee Food Pantry or Oklahoma Medical Research, cancer division, through the funeral home.
