Cherokee Grade Crossing Crash is Fatal to Two

Noah Sanders, 50, and Albert Eakins, 16, are Victims

Two persons were killed Sunday morning at Cherokee when their automobile was struck by a southbound Santa Fe motor train. The accident occurred at the grade Crossing west of Cherokee near the Alfalfa County Fairgrounds.

Noah Sanders, 50 years old, prominent farmer of the Cherokee community, and Albert Eakins, 16 years old, Cherokee youth, were killed instantly in the crash which hurled their automobile 200 feet along the right – of – way.

Picked Youth Up

Mr. Sanders had left his home 8 miles West of Cherokee to go to town. He is believed to have picked young Eakins up on the highway on route. The youth had been working on a farm west of Cherokee and had left there to go to town where his mother, Mrs. Eva Eakins, is a teacher in the grade schools.

The accident occurred at about 10:03 AM. Two trainmen who witnessed the accident said both the auto and the motor train were traveling at a rapid rate of speed when they neared the crossing. The train was due in Cherokee at 10:15 AM but had been delayed and was 15 minutes behind schedule.

Funeral Tuesday

Both victims of the crash were dead when trainmen and witnesses arrived at the scene. The automobile was demolished.

Funeral services for the victims will be held Tuesday afternoon at Cherokee.

Mr. Sanders is survived by his estranged wife, and a daughter, both of whom are living in Kansas City.

He is reported to have left a comfortable estate in land and life insurance.
