GERTRUDE BEATRICE MEYER
Funeral service for Gertrude Beatrice Hockman Meyer will be at the First Christian Church in Cherokee, OK. on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, at 10 a.m. with Dr. Ron Hansen officiating. Burial will follow in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc., of Cherokee. Condolences may be shared online at www.lanmanfuneralhomes.com by clicking on the Ultimate Tributes icon. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the family being present from 6 until 8 p.m.
Beatrice was born July 8, 1914, to George L. Hockman and Martha Jane Motter Hockman in Cherokee, OK. and died Aug. 15, 2005, in Celina, TX. Following graduation from Cherokee High School in 1931, Beatrice went to St. Louis, MO., where she attended Christian Hospital Training School for nurses and graduated in 1935 as a Registered Professional Nurse and president of her class. She following this profession for 55 years, at one time serving as school nurse for Normandy Elementary Schools in St. Louis for 16 years. During her last year of training she married Louis Albert Meyer of St. Louis, MO. on Aug. 19, 1934, in Waterloo, IL. They made their home in St. Louis where two children were born to this union, a daughter, Mary Jane, on Nov. 21, 1937, and a son, Louis Albert Jr., on March 29, 1939. They were actively involved in Memorial Boulevard Christian Church until such time as they moved to Florissant (St. Louis County) where they were charter members of the Florissant Valley Christian Church. Mrs. Meyer was a Girl Scout Leader, a Den Mother for Boy Scouts and a Sunday School teacher for many years.
In 1976, following Mr. Meyer's retirement, they moved to Cherokee, OK., where Beatrice continued to practice her profession for two years at Kiowa District Hospital in Kiowa, KS., Alfalfa County Hospital in Cherokee, OK. for three years and six years as night supervisor at Enid Regional Hospital in Enid, OK. before her retirement in 1987.
Mrs. Meyer was a member of the First Christian Church, CWF, Mr. and Mrs. Class, Chamber of Commerce, Christian Hospital Alumnae Treasurer and Nursing Organizations of ANA, states of Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma, board member and Corporate Secretary of Meyer Labs, Inc. of St. Louis, MO., Corporate Secretary of Wilson Manufacturing, Inc., and former member of BPW and the Women of the Moose.
Surviving are one son, Louis Albert Meyer, Jr. of Cherokee, OK., five grandchildren and their families, Shelley Jayne Hickey of Dallas, TX., Commander Kristi Beth Hickey Depperman and husband Dave and son Andrew of Jacksonville, Fla., Amy Erin Hickey Copeland and husband James and son, Jason and daughter Erin of Dallas, TX., Lt. Commander Bradley Drew Hickey and wife Janelle Means Hickey and sons, Sean and Ryan of Brunswick, Maine, Megan Kathleen Hickey Young and husband Marty and sons, Jacob and Graham of Gilmer, TX., and many nieces and nephews.
Beatrice was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Meyer in 1983, her parents, one daughter, three brothers, two sisters, six sisters-in-law and five brothers-in-law.
Memorials may be made through Lanman Funeral Home to the First Christian Church in lieu of flowers.
