Cherokee Municipal Cemetery


The funeral for Harold Robert McDowell, 74, was at 1:30 PM Tuesday at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Gary Hornish officiating. Burial was in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery, directed by Goodwin Funeral Home.

He was born October 26, 1919, in Cherokee to Orville C. And Hattie Millspaugh McDowell and died February 19, 1994, at Southwest Medical Center, Oklahoma City, following his third open – heart surgery.

He attended Cherokee schools, graduating from Cherokee High School in 1938. He attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University and served in the Oklahoma National Guard, 45th Division, before going to work for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. He then served four years in the 17th Naval Construction Battalion in World War II in the Pacific Theater. After his discharge, he returned to Cherokee and entered business in 1945 with his father at McDowell Electric. He continued to operate the business with his brother until retiring in September 1991.

He was a member of the Christian Church, Christian Men's Fellowship, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Corinthian Lodge 307, Scottish Consistory 32nd degree, Eastern Star and BiL of P.E.O.

He married Rebecca Jane Richards in 1941. She died in 1961. They had and infant son now deceased.

He married Roberta Heline Goode in August 1962.

He is survived by his wife; three children, Colleen and Gary Froemming of Enid, Linda Moore of Norman and Gary and Pamela Goode of Guthrie; a brother, Gordon and Madaline McDowell of Cherokee; a sister, Harriette Treseder of Tulsa; nine grandchildren, Christine Coffman, Darren Froemming, Donelle DeWitt, Kevin Allison, Cindy Goode, Aaron Goode, Angela Drake, Sarah Goode and Justin Goode, and five great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Mr. And Mrs. Sunday School Class of the First Christian Church with the funeral home as custodian of the fund.
