JOHN MARSHALL HIGHFILL
The funeral for John Marshall Highfill, 88, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, July 22, 2006, at First Baptist Church, Cherokee. Rev. Tom Cooksey will officiate. Burial will be in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery. Arrange-ments are by Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Cherokee. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
He was born Oct. 22, 1917, to Alfred Bennett Highfill and Dora Irene Nichols Highfill and died Sunday, July 16, 2006, in Fairview.
He lived his entire life in Alfalfa County doing what he loved best, farming the land and raising shorthorn cattle on the land his family had owned for 100 years. After the death of his wife Evelyn in 2000, he moved to Great Plains Care Center in Helena and later moved to the Fairview Fellowship Home, where he spent the past five years until the time of his death.
He graduated from Lambert High School in 1935 and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp in California prior to his marriage to Evelyn Lavina Clark in 1939. They established their home on a family farm and in 1964 moved to the original farm site where he was born, near Lambert.
He worked in the Alfalfa County Assessor’s Office for 10 years. He retired from the assessor’s office and farming in 1982. He enjoyed traveling across this country, especially in the mountains of Colorado. He was greatly loved and cherished by his children and grandchildren. His humor, stories and songs will be a lasting memory. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Cherokee, where he taught Sunday school for many years and served as an usher. He was an avid fan of Sooner football.
Surviving are daughters, Linda Lovelady and husband Warren of Ringwood, OK and Carol Pierson and husband Duane of Houston, TX; four grandchildren, Mark Weber and wife Donna of Shawnee, OK, Melissa Sony and husband Marc of Kingwood, TX, Brian Pierson and wife Melanie of Richmond, TX, Chris Pierson of Houston, TX; six great-grandchildren, Riley Sony, Caroline Sony, Cade Sony, Nicholas Pierson, Ashley Pierson and Shawn Weber.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, parents and three sisters, Laura Hale, Lenora Wilson and Irma Price, and a granddaughter, Kimberly Ann Weber.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Foundation with Lanman Funeral Home acting as custodian of the funds.
