Cherokee Municipal Cemetery


Cherokee – Harvey D. Hayden, 52, died Monday morning in a Cherokee hospital after a period of ill health. He was born July 25, 1927, at Lambert, moved to Cherokee with his parents in 1937 and graduated from Cherokee high school in 1947.

He was a member of the Oklahoma National Guard unit that was called into action September 1, 1950, and served in Korea.

After returning to Cherokee in May 1952, he and his mother operated the Hayden Café in Cherokee until 1965. Hayden was engaged in farming and auctioneering and after selling the Café, made these his full-time occupations until the time of his death.

Hayden was a member of a Baptist Church. He served on the City Council for several years and was President of the Cherokee Cemetery Board at the time of his death.

He was also a member of the Cherokee American Legion Post No. 33 and the Auctioneers Association.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Ethel Hayden, Cherokee; two sisters, Mrs. Melvin (Evelyn) Cochran, Olathe, Kansas, and Mrs. Williard (Doris) Miller of Cherokee. He was preceded in death by his father.

Graveside rites will be conducted in the Cherokee Municipal Cemetery at 11 AM Wednesday with the Rev. C. M. Wilson as the officiating minister.

Burial will be under the direction of the Goodwin Funeral Home of Cherokee.

A Memorial fund has been established to the Alfalfa County hospital in his name, with the funeral home to serve as custodian of the fund.
