PAUL DAVID GIRTY

Funeral services for Paul David Girty, 83, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 14, 2006, at Cherokee First Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Cooksey and Don Walker officiating. Burial will be in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Goodwin Funeral Home of Cherokee,OK. Visitation at the funeral home will be Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m.

He was born Jan. 20, 1923, in Vian, OK. to Dan and Pearl Austin Girty and died Sunday, April 9, 2006, at Integris Bass Baptist Health Center. Enid, OK.

He attended school in Geary, OK. and Cherokee, OK. After school he worked at Jack’s Bakery in Cherokee washing cake pans, also where he learned the bakery trade. He then attended Air Craft Welding School in Wichita, Kan., and became a certified welder. He welded motor mounts on B-29s.

He and Billy Ruth Cushenbery were married July 1, 1950, in Enid, OK. They established their first home in Waynoka,OK., where he worked in a bakery.

In November 1948, he received his private pilot certificate from the Civil Aeronautics Administration. His wife, Billy Ruth, received her license in 1962, and they enjoyed many hours of flying together.

In December 1967, he started to work for the City of Cherokee, OK. as a patrolman on the police force. He later was promoted to chief. He later worked for a time at the Helena State School and the Alfalfa County Commissioners.

After retirement the family enjoyed traveling in their RV and motorcycling.

He was a member of the Cherokee First Baptist Church, Odd Fellow Lodge and Salty Sams Camping Club.

Surviving are his wife, Billy Ruth, of the home; one daughter, Paula Kay Franks and her husband Jeff; three grandchildren, Kalei Nicole Nixon, Brayden Rea Nixon and Kelby James Franks of Cherokee, OK.; three sisters, Irma Ruth Barnes of Stillwater,OK., Winnie Jo Clark and her husband Gene of Casper, Wyo., and Doris Pritchard and her husband Charles of Lawton, OK.; a sister-in-law, Reda Means of Enid, OK.; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given in his memory to the Diabetes Foundation through Goodwin Funeral Home.
