The funeral for John T. Elliott Sr., 87, was at 2 PM Saturday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Burial was in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery, directed by Fisher Funeral Home.
He was born August 13, 1905, in Lambert to Tom and Effie Froggett Elliott and died February 10, 1993, at St. Mary's Hospital, Enid. He had graduated from Lambert High School in 1923 and attended Northwestern State University, Alva. He played Pro – basketball for Olson – Swedes in Akron, Ohio, and played for Goodyear Tire Company team. He married Bessie Weiss in Akron. She died in 1946. On February 8, 1948, he married EULA Mae Craft in Neosho, Missouri. They moved to Cherokee where they lived from 1948 to 1950, then moved to Fort Scott, Kansas, where he ranched and farmed. In 1959, they moved to Pecan, Illinois, and he worked for Summers Brothers. He retired in 1974 and moved back to Cherokee. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a 64 – year member of Corinthian Lodge 307 in Cherokee, the Guthrie Scottish Rite and the Cherokee Lions Club.
Surviving are his wife; two sons, John T. of Austin, Texas, and Jim of Phoenix, Arizona; a daughter, Nancy Dourneen of Pecan, Illinois; a brother, Harold of Tonkawa; a sister, Mary Zahorski of Cherokee, and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, two brothers and three sisters.
Memorials may be made to the church through the funeral home.
