Cherokee Municipal Cemetery


CHEROKEE — Cherokee – Funeral service for Mary Maxine Main Basett, will be 2:30 p.m. today, April 25, 2010, at First Christian Church in Cherokee with Dr. Ron Hansen and Chaplain Shorty Unruh officiating. Burial will be in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Cherokee.

Mary Maxine Bassett was born April 2, 1919, in Cherokee, OK, the daughter of Pearl and Georgia Bowles Main.

She graduated from Cherokee High School in 1937. Maxine married William Richard "Bill" Bassett on August 31, 1940. They were married for 63 years. Bill was a wheat farmer. Maxine loved working with her roses and making cream candy and divinity to share with friends and family.

She was a member of Cherokee First Christian Church for over 80 years. She was a Sunday shcool teacher for many years and was very active in CWF.

When she moved to Golden Oaks in Enid, she attended Central Christian Church. She loved being catered to by the Caregivers of Central.

Maxine worked as a deputy in the Alfalfa County Clerk's office for 25 years. She also was employed at Farmers Exchange Bank for five years. She was a member of Eastern Star for over 50 years.

Her children are LeAnn and Jack Wheat, Enid and Gary and Nancy Bassett, Cherokee. Her grandchildren are Heather and David Gilley, Cherokee and Tiffany and Travis Baird, Sharon, Okla. She adored her three great-grandsons, Kolby and Kolten Gilley and Austin Baird. Other family includes Doris Elaine Main Irwin, niece, Donald Main, nephew and Ann Murrow, cousin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brother, Howard Main.

She will be greatly missed by her family and many others who have been touched by her life.

Memorials may be made through Lanman Funeral Home to the Cherokee First Christian Church CWF group or Enid Central Christian Church Caregivers.
