Civil War veteran answers the last roll call

J. F. Altaffer is laid to rest Tuesday beside his companion of 60 years who preceded him two months.

J. F. Altaffer passed away at the hospital in Enid Monday evening, October 3, 1921, after an illness of seven weeks which began only a few days after the burial of his wife who died August 5, and with whom he had lived for nearly 60 years. Just after he took sick he remarked that he had been away from her long enough and it was time for him to go to her. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church at 3:30 Tuesday afternoon and burial was in the family lot in the Eastern Star Cemetery. Rev. J. T. Pimlott preached the sermon.

J. F. Altaffer was born in Richland County, Ohio, August 27, 1842, so at the time of his death was 79 years, one month and six days of age. His parents moved to Michigan when he was a boy and on December 26, 1861, he was married to Nancy Myers. To this union were born four boys and three girls, four of whom are still living and are: Frank D, W. Arthur, Mrs. Effie Wehrley and J. Wilbur.

Mr. Altaffer served his country in the Civil War and was a member of the G. A. R. and the Chronoscope files show that he was Adjutant of the Woods County Post 20 years ago. He was a member of the Methodist Church.

He moved with his family from Michigan to Wichita County, Kansas, 35 years ago and about a year after the Opening of the Cherokee Strip they located west of Aline and have since made their home in and near Aline.

Mr. Altaffer was a traveling salesman in his younger days and never lost the briskness which he acquired, and he was lively and a fast walker up until the time of his last sickness.

He also had a very active mind and in the last year he secured a patent for a metal rail tie which is said by many will solve the problem of the shortage of timber for ties. He has had correspondence with manufacturers and railroad men who have shown considerable interest in it.

The children and grandchildren wish to express to the people of Aline and vicinity their sincerest thanks and appreciation for the many acts of kindness which were shown them and their parents in their illness and after their death. The words of sympathy have been a great help to them during the double bereavement in a few weeks.
