Funeral Services for Mildred Whelchel Fletcher, 87, will be held Saturday, September 25, at 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Barry Hayes officiating. Burial will be in the Stilwell City Cemetery under the direction of Hart Funeral Home of Stilwell.
She was born on March 3, 1923, in Evansville, Arkansas to W.A. (Dolf) and Lula Young Whelchel. She died on September 17, 2010 in the home of her son Mike (Kim) Fletcher of Cody, Wyoming. Mildred moved to Cody 5 years ago when she could no longer remain in her home in Stilwell due to her declining health.
She had taught school and coached basketball at Cane Hill, Arkansas then was recruited by the War Department and worked in the Pentagon during WWII. She later married Joe Fletcher on August 24, 1948 in Springdale, Arkansas. They eventually made their home and raised their family at Cookson, where Joe was manager of Cookson Hills Game Management Area. Mildred first attended the University of Arkansas and later Northeastern State University obtaining her bachelor’s degree and worked as a social worker and supervisor at the Department of Human Services in Cherokee and Adair counties for at total of 21 years. Upon retirement, Joe and Mildred moved to Stilwell and were active members in the First United Methodist Church.
Mildred was preceded in death by husband Joe Roger Fletcher, Sr., her parents Dolf and Lula Whelchel, two brothers YW and Kenneth, niece Jerrie Ross, and great-nephew Kevin Ross.
Mildred is survived by her sons, Joe Roger Fletcher, Jr. (Terri) Fletcher of Stilwell, Oklahoma, Michael (Kim) Fletcher of Cody, Wyoming, grandchildren Joe M. Fletcher, Audra K. Fletcher (Jeff) Bigfeather, Benjamin M. Fletcher, and Nathan A. Fletcher, one great-grandchild, Canyon Bigfeather and by several nieces and one nephew and their families.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests remembrances be sent to First United Methodist Church of Stilwell.
