This is a volunteer not for profit project dedicated to putting cemetery information and obituaries online. Our desire, in creating this web site, is making this information freely available to help genealogy researchers locate the burial place of their ancestors and family members, to be able to view & download a photo of their headstone and possibly view an obituary.
If you are interested in becoming an area coordinator or would like to assist in creating pages without being a coordinator, please contact Tammie. You do not have to live in Oklahoma to adopt or assist with a county. If you would like to help code the pages, create a cemetery listing, headstone photo pages or obituary pages, we would love to have you join us. If you would be interested in just taking headstone photos, but not do the webpages, we would appreciate it. If volunteering to take photos, please contact Tammie or Donna for instructions. Please check the cemetery page to be sure photos have not already been taken.
Some basics about what is needed to become volunteer area coordinator. It will be your responsibility to maintain the site for the county you adopt. If you are assisting, you will still need to learn how to do the pages and you will be responsible for creating the pages you have requested to assist with. If you do not know how to do this, Donna will train you. Training is done via email or instant messeging. Our trainer prefers to do face to face training, but unless you are willing to come to Woodward, OK, or she happens to be in your neighborhood, that isn't possible. Next best choie is to use Yahoo Messenger, but she can also be found on MSN Messenger or Facebook.
FTP is File transfer protocol. It is what allows you to transfer files from your computer to the internet server or from the server to your computer. You will need to download a software program that will allow you to do this. One program is AceFTP. A free version is at AceFTP Freeware
The pages are done using html coding. (Hypertext Mark-up Language - the code needed for web pages to show up online). I use Arachnophilia 4.0 It no longer has tech support, but it is an easy program to use. Arachnophilia 4.0 is a CareWare program.
If you need to do a page for a cemetery listing, you can usa a program such as Excel, MSOffice, MSWord or MSWorks spreadsheet or database to create the listing & add necessary coding for html. Cemetery Database Creator is a program that allows you to enter the information, filling in the blanks. It then alphabetizes the lists, and creates an HTM file for you which includes the transcriber's name, email address, cemetery location and comments.
AFTER you have downloaded & installed the necessary FTP & HTML programs, our trainer will instruct you on the details needed to access Oklahoma Cemeteries server, creating pages, uploading to server, etc. When you are ready to start learning, contact our trainer by email.
